Become a Disaster Services Volunteer

There are several volunteer opportunities for involvement in Disaster Services. Training is required for all disaster volunteers and is free of charge. Time commitment varies depending on level of involvement. (Click here to view/print the brochure)

  • Disaster Action Teams:

Red Cross Disaster Action teams are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, helping families and individuals get back on their feet after a disaster.

Emergency assistance may include temporary housing, food, clothing, basic household furnishings, help with health care needs and referrals to other agencies.

During large disasters volunteers are needed to work in shelters and on mobile kitchens, conduct damage assessments, provide medical care and crisis intervention and more.
  • Disaster Services Reserve:

Disaster Reserves will be called upon during large disasters such as hurricanes and ice storms. After completing the basic disaster training, Disaster Reserves are expected to attend at least one refresher training or one volunteer meeting per year to keep up to date.
  • Partners in Disaster:

Throughout the year the Mid-Fairfield County Chapter provides training to community agencies and families of faith in order to train their members to respond to large disasters. Each group has a contact person that agrees to coordinate their volunteers following a large disaster. After a disaster, the Chapter can call the contact person who can coordinate their group.

Training for Disaster Volunteers

All disaster training is free of charge.

All disaster training is free of charge. The first course for all new disaster volunteers is Introduction to Disaster Services. Once you complete this training, you will have the opportunity to choose specialty areas (or disaster function) for further training.

If you're interested in becoming a volunteer with the Mid-Fairfield county chapter you can now complete the Introduction to Disaster Services course on-line. >> click here <<

When you've completed the course, print the final page and return it to the chapter.

Some volunteers choose functions that are similar to their work experiences (for example, a social worker may choose to work as a family services caseworker).

Some volunteers may choose to work in a function that is completely new and different to them (for example an accountant might choose Mass Care).

  • Training for Disaster Action Teams:
Introduction to Disaster Services, training in the area of their choice ( family services, disaster assessment, etc.) and the DAT Workshop.
  • Training for Disaster Reserves:
Introduction to Disaster Services, training in their chosen area (Mass Care, Family services, etc.) .
